Scenic Drives are plentiful in this part of the world with beautiful mountain vistas, tranquil lakes, babbling brooks and tree clad hillsides peppered with traditional New England villages.
Here are just a few suggestions for getting out on the road and exploring, whether it’s to watch out for wildlife, search out Spring flowers or go leaf peeping in the Fall.
White Mountains Trail
This national scenic byway is a 100 mile route; it’s scenic and takes in cultural, historic and recreational attractions on the way. Begin in Conway and head north on Route 16 for Glen, where you will proceed on Route 302 west through Crawford Notch.

The Flume
Follow the I-93 south to Route 3 in North Woodstock, then turn east on Route 112, the Kancamagus Scenic Byway, filled with dramatic views all the way back to your starting point on Route 16 in Conway.
Bear Notch Road
This route goes from the Kancamagus Highway west of Conway (near Jigger Johnson Campground) to the center of Bartlett village, where it meets Route 302. Often used to bypass North Conway, there are some fine views and a chance to spot moose or bear.
Cathedral Ledge
Being the northernmost of the two ledges to the west of North Conway village, Cathedral Ledge is one of the area’s most distinctive landmarks. Spectacular views of the valley below can be seen from the top of the 1,150 foot high ledge. Travelling from North Conway village, turn left onto River Road, and Cathedral Ledge Road can be found 1.4 miles along on the left. The 1.7 mile long road ends in a circular turn, so you can park up and walk in.
West Side Road, Bartlett
On the descent from the top of Cathedral Ledge, turn left on to West Side Road, the Bartlett section has stunning views along the river, of Humphrey’s Ledge and north-northeast towards Glen.
Evans Notch
Take the East Conway Road from Redstone past farmland to Route 113 north. When you get into the White Mountain National Forest, you will find the road is tree lined. As you continue your journey, the road follows the Wild River. To return to the Valley, turn west on Route 2 for Gorham, then take Route 16 south. |
